2/2/10 - For 2010 KRA will add a Clone engine 4 cycle class. The Clone engines are low cost and must be run very close to box stock and the class is becoming very popular at many tracks. We will be using the new WKA International Class engine rules available here (sections 710 thru 710.20). KRA will also have a $200 claimer rule on the clone class for the engine. The Clone class will run on track with the Briggs Animal class and scored seperately. The class will also have open tires and sizes and a minimum weight of 365 lbs. The class will also allow CIK style bodywork or traditional style 4 cycle bodywork.

We realize this is a fairly outlaw approach in regards to bodywork and tires but a lot of new karters have purchased a wide variety of used, low cost equipment and this class will hopefully allow them to race without further expense. For a complete breakdown of the rules please visit the Classes Page.

I hear that the engine makes about 13HP. Sounds like a pretty neat class. Definately a low budget one!

I do not under the $200 Claim Rule.

Quote:
$200 Engine Claim Rule, does not include any external aftermarket bolt on parts including the clutch, exhaust system, engine mount, chain guard, fuel pump, throttle linkage assembly, filter cup, top plate

In the event a driver declines having their engine claimed by another competitor, they will be disqualified from that days race and lose their points for that race day in the clone class, claimers must have ran in the clone class that day. A claimer must present $200 cash to the tech director before the claimed engine has been released from tech.

Someone care to explain?

I would assume you can purchase the engine from a competitor after the race for 200.00 , to keep people from spending big money on a motor to make it faster.

Interesting concept.

Well, if this class attracts and keeps racers, then it is probably a good thing.

I don't mean to change subject but I've been wondering this Clone engine for a while. (Not getting one)
Is it complete copy of a Honda engine?
If so, how can they sell it in the United States?
Isn't that againt law?

We had a claimer rule on the Honda GX120 and GX160 engines we ran in quarter midgets. At the time it was $450. To claim an engine you had to file a claim with cash in hand to the race director at the conclusion of a race that your driver was participating in.

The engine was torn down completely in tech. If any parts were found to be illegal, the claimer got his money back and the illegal parts were confiscated. This also lead to a suspension from competition depending on how illegal the engine was. If the engine was found to be legal, then the claimer got to keep the engine.

Net effect I saw, was that everyone still had to put more than $500 to blueprint a stock engine. If you didn’t, you could not be competitive. I don’t see this being any different. It says budget, but if you want to be competitive, you will still have to pay.

Claiming an engine was more about vengeance than actually trying to keep cheaters in check. If someone didn’t like another person, if you had the cash, just claim their motor. I saw this mostly at national events, rarely at club events (but I did see it a few times).

Sorry to say looks like no. They are calling out "Blue or Yellow Clones" which are a chiniese copy of a Honda.

find here: http://www.newcastleraceway.com/classes.shtml

BeaveRun is adding a clone class which will race on the west half of the track. I personally don't see these as a good class on large tracks as the Bev or NCMP. And find it hard to support as it seems to be a kick in the face to Briggs and others. But there are many that see this as a saving grace for karting. I just don't see it that way.

Toshiya , Honda only currently has patents on the image or appearance of its GX , GC etc etc ,series engines , there was law suit recently against the "look alike" engines,
to which they won, all the importers just has to make cosmetic changes, gas tanks , pull start covers , exhaust..

the original internal components patents ran out or never renewed...
BTW Honda and many other small engine manufacturers have there small class engines produces in factories right across the street from one another.....

interesting relationship , Japanese engines made the Chinese and Taiwanese's now..
