|
|
There was some discussion in the "Pre Tech" Topic about teching chips in brake rotors. I know we don't want chips in brake rotors, but they get there. So my question is how big does a chip or crack need to be to fail Tech? Is there a diminision or gage that can be used to determine this? I read through the 2009 rules and couldn't find anything specific?

Is the danger of chipped brake rotors only for the corner worker or is there a concern for brake failure?
To be more specific if you had a brake rotor that had 2 large chips in it and the rotor had been in this condition for 4 seasons would you have concern for failure if it had lasted this long and the chips did not increase?
At what point does the chip go from cosmetic to possible failure?
Where again in the WKA Tech book does it address chipped rotors?
Thanks,

I don't think it addresses chipped brake rotors at all...matter of fact, I know it doesn't.
I believe that it falls under the sharp protruding object category???? |

Its not in the WKA manual.
Common sense again, if you have a small chip file it down and you should be al right. If you have a fracture line in the rotor, that, in my opinion should be replaced.

Well, here's my $10.00 worth. (2 cents adjusted for inflation.)
If the disk is flaking, that is losing material from the rotor face, it's likely a result of poor casting on the manufacturers part. This, to me, means that the whole rotor is in question, and I'd replace it.
If the chip is a result of contact with the track, then I'd do as Pat suggests. Just be sure to check carefully for cracks radiating from the center out. They spell disaster.
Unless the "Chip" is big enough to allow the pad to "shimmy", when the brakes are applied, and can't possibly catch the rotor, you could get by, for a while.
